GSM - Expository Preaching

An intensive, two-week course on the preparation and delivery of expository sermons. This course is patterned after The Master’s Seminary’s doctorate of ministry course in expository preaching.

Dates and Course Titles:
10-14 Sept, 2012 A study process for preparing expository sermons
21-25 January, 2013 Crafting and delivering expository sermons
Cost: R500 per week, lunches and syllabus included.

Pre-class Assignments for the first week: (Assignments are due the first day of class.)
1) Study and preach these key passages on preaching before coming to class:

  • Ezra 7:1-10 (especially v. 10)
  • Nehemiah 8:1-8
  • Romans 10:14-17
  • 1 Corinthians 1:18-25
  • 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

2) Bring to class a CD or an audio tape of your sermon from one of the passages assigned above. Afrikaans or African language sermons are allowable if you don´t normally preach in English.

3) Read one of the following two books:

  • Rediscovering Expository Preaching by John MacArthur and the TMS staff.
  • Power in the Pulpit by Jerry Vines and Jim Shaddix

4) Read Expository Studying by Joel James, chapters 1-3 and 5-8.

This book is available for free download under the Resources/Booklets section on this website. Alternatively, a hard copy can be purchased by emailing a request to pastor@gracefellowship.co.za.

  • Complete the exercises at the end of chapters 5 and 6.
  • Study the sample block diagrams and outlines on pp. 138-151.
  • Bring Expository Studying with you to class, as we will use this text in class.

5) Additional recommended reading. While not required, it is highly recommended that you read read Between Two Worlds by John Stott before coming to class.

6) Bring to class a copy of your favourite quote on the subject of expository preaching. This quote can be from any book on preaching, not just those assigned for the class. Be prepared to explain why it is your favourite quote.

7) Listen to the supplied CD by D. A. Carson on the subject of expository preaching.

8) Having preached the assigned Scripture passages and having completed the reading and listening assignments listed above, write a 5-10 page paper addressing the biblical and theological basis for expository preaching.

  • The paper should be typed, not handwritten (unless you have absolutely no access to a computer). Format: A4-size paper with one-inch margins on all sides, double-spaced, Times New Roman font (size 12). Use endnotes as the method of citation.
